An-Naba

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 1

   عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

   'Amma Yatasaa-aloon

   What are they asking (one another) about?

2. 2

   عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

   'Anin-nabaa-il 'azeem

   About the great news, (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism, the Qur’ân, which Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم brought and the Day of Resurrection)

3. 3

   ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

   Allazi hum feehi mukh talifoon

   About which they are in disagreement.

4. 4

   كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

   Kallaa sa y'alamoon

   Nay, they will come to know!

5. 5

   ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

   Thumma kallaa sa y'alamoon

   Nay, again, they will come to know!

6. 6

   أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَٰدًۭا

   Alam naj'alil arda mihaa da

   Have We not made the earth as a bed,

7. 7

   وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًۭا

   Wal jibaala au taada

   And the mountains as pegs?

8. 8

   وَخَلَقْنَٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا

   Wa khalaq naakum azwaaja

   And We have created you in pairs (male and female, tall and short, good and bad, etc.).

9. 9

   وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًۭا

   Waja'alnan naumakum subata

   And We have made your sleep as a thing for rest.

10. 10

    وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًۭا

    Waja'alnal laila libasa

    And We have made the night as a covering (through its darkness),

11. 11

    وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًۭا

    Waja'alnan nahara ma 'aasha

    And We have made the day for livelihood.

12. 12

    وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًۭا شِدَادًۭا

    Wa banaina fauqakum sab 'an shi daada

    And We have built above you seven strong (heavens),

13. 13

    وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًۭا وَهَّاجًۭا

    Waja'alna siraajaw wah haaja

    And We have made (therein) a shining lamp (sun).

14. 14

    وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءًۭ ثَجَّاجًۭا

    Wa anzalna minal m'usiraati maa-an saj-jaaja

    And We have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water.

15. 15

    لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّۭا وَنَبَاتًۭا

    Linukh rija bihee habbaw wana baata

    That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations,

16. 16

    وَجَنَّٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا

    Wa jan naatin alfafa

    And gardens of thick growth.

17. 17

    إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَٰتًۭا

    Inna yaumal-fasli kana miqaata

    Verily, the Day of Decision is a fixed time,

18. 18

    يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًۭا

    Yauma yun fakhu fis-soori fataa toona afwaaja

    The Day when the Trumpet will be blown, and you shall come forth in crowds (groups after groups). [Tafsir At-Tabari]

19. 19

    وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًۭا

    Wa futiha tis samaa-u fakaanat abwaaba

    And the heaven shall be opened, and it will become as gates,

20. 20

    وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

    Wa suyyi raatil jibaalu fa kaanat saraaba

    And the mountains shall be moved away from their places and they will be as if they were a mirage.

21. 21

    إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًۭا

    Inna jahan nama kaanat mirsaada

    Truly, Hell is a place of ambush -

22. 22

    لِّلطَّٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًۭا

    Lit taa gheena ma aaba

    A dwelling place for the Tâghûn (those who transgress the boundary limits set by Allâh like polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh, hyprocrites, sinners, criminals),

23. 23

    لَّٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًۭا

    Laa bitheena feehaa ahqaaba

    They will abide therein for ages.

24. 24

    لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًۭا وَلَا شَرَابًا

    Laa ya zooqoona feeha bar daw walaa sharaaba

    Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink.

25. 25

    إِلَّا حَمِيمًۭا وَغَسَّاقًۭا

    Illa hamee maw-wa ghas saaqa

    Except boiling water, and dirty wound discharges -

26. 26

    جَزَآءًۭ وِفَاقًا

    Jazaa-aw wi faaqa

    An exact recompense (according to their evil crimes).

27. 27

    إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًۭا

    Innahum kaanu laa yarjoona hisaaba

    For verily, they used not to look for a reckoning.

28. 28

    وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كِذَّابًۭا

    Wa kazzabu bi aayaa tina kizzaba

    But they belied Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, and that which Our Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم brought) completely.

29. 29

    وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَٰهُ كِتَٰبًۭا

    Wa kulla shai-in ahsai naahu kitaa ba

    And all things We have recorded in a Book.

30. 30

    فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

    Fa zooqoo falan-nazee dakum ill-laa azaaba

    So taste you (the results of your evil actions). No increase shall We give you, except in torment.

31. 31

    إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

    Inna lil mutta qeena mafaaza

    Verily, for the Muttaqûn,[1] there will be a success (Paradise);

    (V.78:31) Muttaqûn: means pious believer of Islamic Monotheism who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained).

32. 32

    حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَٰبًۭا

    Hadaa-iqa wa a'anaa ba

    Gardens and vineyards,

33. 33

    وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًۭا

    Wa kaawa 'iba at raaba

    And young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age,

34. 34

    وَكَأْسًۭا دِهَاقًۭا

    Wa ka'san di haaqa

    And a full cup (of wine).

35. 35

    لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًۭا

    Laa yasma'oona fiha lagh waw walaa kizzaba

    No Laghw (dirty, false, evil talk) shall they hear therein, nor lying;

36. 36

    جَزَآءًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًۭا

    Jazaa-am mir-rabbika ataa-an hisaaba

    A reward from your Lord, an ample calculated gift (according to the best of their good deeds),[2]

    (V.78:36) a) Islâm demolishes all the previous evil deeds and so do migration (for Allâh’s sake) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah). (Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, Chapter 52, Page 18). b) What is said regarding the superiority of a person who embraces Islâm sincerely: Narrated Abu Sa‘îd Al-Khudri رضي الله عنه: Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "If a person embraces Islâm sincerely, then Allâh shall forgive all his past sins, and after that starts the settlement of accounts: the reward of his good deeds will be ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed, and an evil deed will be recorded as it is unless Allâh forgives it." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.1, Hadith No. 40A). Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If any one of you improves (follows strictly) his Islâmic religion, then his good deeds will be rewarded ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and a bad deed will be recorded as it is." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.1, Hadith No. 40B).

37. 37

    رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًۭا

    Rabbis samaa waati wal ardi wa maa baina humar rahmaani laa yam likoona minhu khi taaba

    (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatsoever is in between them, the Most Gracious, with Whom they cannot dare to speak (on the Day of Resurrection except by His Leave).

38. 38

    يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّۭا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًۭا

    Yauma yaqoo mur roohu wal malaa-ikatu saf-fal laa yata kalla moona illa man azina lahur rahmaanu wa qaala sawaaba

    The Day that Ar-Rûh [Jibrîl (Gabriel) or another angel] and the angels will stand forth in rows, they will not speak except him whom the Most Gracious (Allâh) allows, and he will speak what is right.

39. 39

    ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا

    Zaalikal yaumul haqqu faman shaa-at ta khaaza ill-laa rabbihi ma-aaba

    That is (without doubt) the True Day. So, whosoever wills, let him seek a place with (or a way to) His Lord (by obeying Him in this worldly life)!

40. 40

    إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَٰكُمْ عَذَابًۭا قَرِيبًۭا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا

    In naa anzar naakum azaaban qareebaiy-yauma yan zurul marr-u maa qaddamat yadaahu wa ya qoolul-kaafiru yaa lai tanee kuntu turaaba

    Verily, We have warned you of a near torment - the Day when man will see that (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever will say: "Woe to me! Would that I were dust!"
