Surah 56

Al-Waqi'ah

الوَاقِعَةِ

Al-Waqi'ah · Meccan · 96 verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

  1. 1

    إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ

    Izaa waqa'atil waaqi'ah

    When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.

  2. 2

    لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

    Laisa liwaq'atihaa kaazibah

    And there can be no denial of its befalling.

  3. 3

    خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ

    Khafidatur raafi'ah

    Bringing low (some - those who will enter Hell) Exalting (others - those who will enter Paradise). [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

  4. 4

    إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا

    Izaa rujjatil ardu rajjaa

    When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.

  5. 5

    وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا

    Wa bussatil jibaalu bassaa

    And the mountains will be powdered to dust,

  6. 6

    فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا

    Fakaanat habaaa'am mumbassaa

    So that they will become floating dust particles.

  7. 7

    وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭ

    Wa kuntum azwaajan salaasah

    And you (all) will be in three groups.

  8. 8

    فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

    Fa as haabul maimanati maaa as haabul maimanah

    So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands) - how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand! (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).

  9. 9

    وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

    Wa as haabul mash'amati maaa as haabul mash'amah

    And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands) - how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand! (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).

  10. 10

    وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ

    Wassaabiqoonas saabiqoon

    And those foremost [(in Islâmic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islâm] will be foremost (in Paradise).

  11. 11

    أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ

    Ulaaa'ikal muqarraboon

    These will be the nearest (to Allâh).

  12. 12

    فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

    Fee Jannaatin Na'eem

    In the Gardens of Delight (Paradise).

  13. 13

    ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

    Sullatum minal awwaleen

    A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islâm).

  14. 14

    وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

    Wa qaleelum minal aa khireen

    And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later generations.

  15. 15

    عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ

    'Alaa sururim mawdoonah

    (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones.

  16. 16

    مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ

    Muttaki'eena 'alaihaa mutaqabileen

    Reclining thereon, face to face.

  17. 17

    يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ

    Yatoofu 'alaihim wildaa num mukkhalladoon

    Immortal boys will go around them (serving),

  18. 18

    بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ

    Bi akwaabinw wa abaareeq, wa kaasim mim ma'een

    With cups, and jugs, and a glass of flowing wine,

  19. 19

    لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ

    Laa yusadda'oona 'anhaa wa laa yunzifoon

    Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.

  20. 20

    وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ

    Wa faakihatim mimmaa yatakhaiyaroon

    And with fruit that they may choose.

  21. 21

    وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

    Wa lahmi tairim mimmaa yashtahoon

    And with the flesh of fowls that they desire.

  22. 22

    وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ

    Wa hoorun'een

    And (there will be) Hûr (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for "Al-Muttaqûn" - the pious - See V. 2:2),

  23. 23

    كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ

    Ka amsaalil lu'lu'il maknoon

    Like unto preserved pearls.

  24. 24

    جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

    Jazaaa'am bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon

    A reward for what they used to do.

  25. 25

    لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

    Laa yasma'oona feehaa laghwanw wa laa taaseemaa

    No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting).

  26. 26

    إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا

    Illaa qeelan salaaman salaamaa

    But only the saying of: Salâm! Salâm! (greetings with peace)![1]

  27. 27

    وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ

    Wa as haabul yameeni maaa as haabul Yameen

    And those on the Right Hand - how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand?

  28. 28

    فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ

    Fee sidrim makhdood

    (They will be) among thornless lote-trees,

  29. 29

    وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ

    Wa talhim mandood

    And among Talh (banana-trees) with fruits piled one above another,

  30. 30

    وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ

    Wa zillim mamdood

    And in shade long-extended,

  31. 31

    وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ

    Wa maaa'im maskoob

    And by water flowing constantly,

  32. 32

    وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ

    Wa faakihatin kaseerah

    And fruit in plenty,

  33. 33

    لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ

    Laa maqtoo'atinw wa laa mamnoo'ah

    Whose supply is not cut off (by change of season), nor are they out of reach,

  34. 34

    وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ

    Wa furushim marfoo'ah

    And on couches or thrones, raised high.

  35. 35

    إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ

    Innaaa anshaanaahunna inshaaa'aa

    Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.

  36. 36

    فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا

    Faja'alnaahunna abkaaraa

    And made them virgins.

  37. 37

    عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا

    'Uruban atraabaa

    Loving (their husbands only), (and) of equal age.

  38. 38

    لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

    Li as haabil yameen

    For those on the Right Hand.

  39. 39

    ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

    Sullatum minal awwa leen

    A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islâm).

  40. 40

    وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

    Wa sullatum minal aakhireen

    And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later generations.

  41. 41

    وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ

    Wa as haabush shimaali maaa as haabush shimaal

    And those on the Left Hand - how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand?

  42. 42

    فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ

    Fee samoominw wa hameem

    In fierce hot wind and boiling water,

  43. 43

    وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ

    Wa zillim miny yahmoom

    And shadow of black smoke,

  44. 44

    لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

    Laa baaridinw wa laa kareem

    (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) pleasant,

  45. 45

    إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

    Innaahum kaanoo qabla zaalika mutrafeen

    Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,

  46. 46

    وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

    Wa kaanoo yusirroona 'alal hinsil 'azeem

    And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allâh, committing murder and other crimes)[2]

  47. 47

    وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

    Wa kaanoo yaqooloona a'izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa izaaman'ainnaa lamab'oosoon

    And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?

  48. 48

    أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

    Awa aabaaa'unal awwaloon

    "And also our forefathers?"

  49. 49

    قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

    Qul innal awwaleena wal aakhireen

    Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.

  50. 50

    لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ

    Lamajmoo'oona ilaa meeqaati yawmim ma'loon

    "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day.

  51. 51

    ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ

    summa innakum ayyuhad daaalloonal mukazziboon

    "Then moreover, verily you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!

  52. 52

    لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ

    La aakiloona min shaja rim min zaqqoom

    "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqûm.

  53. 53

    فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

    Famaali'oona minhal butoon

    "Then you will fill your bellies therewith,

  54. 54

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ

    Fashaariboona 'alaihi minal hameem

    "And drink boiling water on top of it.

  55. 55

    فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

    Fashaariboona shurbal heem

    "And you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"

  56. 56

    هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

    Haazaa nuzuluhum yawmad deen

    That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!

  57. 57

    نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

    Nahnu khalaqnaakum falaw laa tusaddiqoon

    We created you: then why do you believe not?

  58. 58

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ

    Afara'aytum maa tumnoon

    Then tell Me (about) the (human) semen that you emit.

  59. 59

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ

    'A-antum takhluqoo nahooo am nahnul khaaliqoon

    Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator?

  60. 60

    نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

    Nahnu qaddarnaa baina kumul mawta wa maa nahnu bimasbooqeen

    We have decreed death to you all, and We are not outstripped,

  61. 61

    عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

    'Alaaa an nubaddila amsaalakum wa nunshi'akum fee maa laa ta'lamoon

    To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.

  62. 62

    وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

    Wa laqad 'alimtumun nash atal oolaa falaw laa tazakkaroon

    And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam): why then do you not remember (or take heed)?

  63. 63

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ

    Afara'aytum maa tahrusoon

    Then tell Me about the seed that you sow in the ground.

  64. 64

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

    'A-antum tazra'oonahooo am nahnuz zaari'ooon

    Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?

  65. 65

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ

    Law nashaaa'u laja'al naahu hutaaman fazaltum tafakkahoon

    Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment) [Tafsir Ibn Kathîr].

  66. 66

    إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ

    Innaa lamughramoon

    (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramûn (i.e. ruined or have lost the money without any profit, or are punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation)! (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî)

  67. 67

    بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

    Bal nahnu mahroomoon

    "Nay, but we are deprived!"

  68. 68

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ

    Afara'aytumul maaa'allazee tashraboon

    Then tell Me about the water that you drink.

  69. 69

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

    'A-antum anzaltumoohu minal muzni am nahnul munziloon

    Is it you who cause it from the rain-clouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down?

  70. 70

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًۭا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

    Law nashaaa'u ja'alnaahu ujaajan falaw laa tashkuroon

    If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable): why then do you not give thanks (to Allâh)?

  71. 71

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ

    Afara'aytumun naaral latee tooroon

    Then tell Me about the fire which you kindle.

  72. 72

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

    'A-antum anshaatum shajaratahaaa am nahnul munshi'oon

    Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?

  73. 73

    نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

    Nahnu ja'alnaahaa tazkira tanw wa mataa'al lilmuqween

    We have made it a Reminder (of the Hell-fire in the Hereafter), and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world).

  74. 74

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

    Fasabbih bismi Rabbikal 'azeem

    Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

  75. 75

    ۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ

    Falaa uqsimu bimaawaa qi'innujoom

    So I swear by the setting of the stars.[1]

    (V.56:75) In Arabic Mawâqi‘i An-Nujûm: This word has many interpretations: it may mean the setting or the rising or the mansions of the stars, or the Qur’ân and its gradual revelation in stages. Please see Tafsir At-Tabari for detail..

  76. 76

    وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ

    Wa innahoo laqasamul lawta'lamoona'azeem

    And verily that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.

  77. 77

    إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ

    Innahoo la quraanun kareem

    That (this) is indeed an honourable recitation (the Noble Qur’ân).

  78. 78

    فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ

    Fee kitaabim maknoon

    In a Book well-guarded (with Allâh in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz ).

  79. 79

    لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

    Laa yamassuhooo illal mutahharoon

    Which (that Book with Allâh) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels).

  80. 80

    تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

    Tanzeelum mir Rabbil'aalameen

    A Revelation (this Qur’ân) from the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

  81. 81

    أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ

    Afabihaazal hadeesi antum mudhinoon

    Is it such a talk (this Qur’ân) that you (disbelievers) deny?

  82. 82

    وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

    Wa taj'aloona rizqakum annakum tukazziboon

    And instead (of thanking Allâh) for the provision He gives you, you deny (Him by disbelief)!

  83. 83

    فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ

    Falaw laaa izaa balaghatil hulqoom

    Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?

  84. 84

    وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ

    Wa antum heena'izin tanzuroon

    And you at the moment are looking on,

  85. 85

    وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ

    Wa nahnu aqrabu ilaihi minkum wa laakil laa tubsiroon

    But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, (Tafsir At-Tabarî)

  86. 86

    فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ

    Falaw laaa in kuntum ghira madeeneen

    Then why do you not - if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment) -

  87. 87

    تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

    Tarji'oonahaaa in kuntum saadiqeen

    Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?

  88. 88

    فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

    Fa ammaaa in kaana minal muqarrabeen

    Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabûn (those brought near to Allâh),

  89. 89

    فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢ

    Farawhunw wa raihaa nunw wa jannatu na'eem

    (There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise).

  90. 90

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

    Wa ammaaa in kaana min as haabil yameen

    And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,

  91. 91

    فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

    Fasalaamul laka min as haabil yameen

    Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allâh) for those on the right Hand.

  92. 92

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

    Wa ammaaa in kaana minal mukazzibeenad daaalleen

    But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islâmic Monotheism),

  93. 93

    فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ

    Fanuzulum min hameem

    Then for him is an entertainment with boiling water.

  94. 94

    وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

    Wa tasliyatu jaheem

    And burning in Hell-fire.

  95. 95

    إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

    Inna haaza lahuwa haqqul yaqeen

    Verily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.

  96. 96

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

    Fasabbih bismi rabbikal 'azeem

    So glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
